In Schongau, Upper Bavaria, a major emergency response was triggered at Welfen-Gymnasium on Wednesday midday, 8 July. Officers later confirmed that several people were seriously injured in the incident. According to investigators, those injured include at least two 13-year-old girls who were admitted to hospital for medical treatment. It was initially unclear whether their lives were in danger.
The total number of injured remained initially undetermined. A spokesman for the emergency services spoke of a single-digit number of victims. The incident appeared to indicate a shooting rampage, it was stated.
Following the incident, officers arrested a suspected perpetrator. The individual is a 16-year-old youth. Whether this person themselves attended the affected educational institution could initially not be clarified. Investigators initially made no statements regarding a possible weapon that may have been used.
Police were present at the school grounds with a large contingent. Residents were asked to avoid the area widely. For concerned family members and parents, the fire service set up a support centre.
Schongau is located in western Upper Bavaria on the Lech and has around 12,000 residents. The affected gymnasium is situated in immediate proximity to the historic old town. According to the school's online presence, approximately 800 young people are taught there by more than 80 educators. There are further educational institutions in the neighbourhood.
The incident occurred in the final weeks of the Bavarian school year. Whilst A-level students had already received their final certificates on 26 June, report cards for remaining students are due to be issued on 31 July.
