Schongau: Violent attack at gymnasium leaves multiple injured
On Wednesday, a violent attack occurred at Welfen Gymnasium in Schongau, a town in southern Bavaria. Several people sustained injuries in the incident. Bavarian police confirmed the arrest of a suspected perpetrator and advised the public to avoid the area.
The exact number of victims and the severity of injuries remained initially unclear. Investigators worked to clarify the circumstances. For relatives of the affected young people, the fire service in the municipality set up emergency support.
Schongau is approximately 100 kilometres south-west of Munich. Further details regarding the method of attack or possible motives were not released by the authorities.
Germany has repeatedly experienced serious violent incidents at educational institutions and in public spaces in recent times. In September 2025, a youth from Kosovo had seriously injured a teacher with a stabbing weapon at a vocational school in Essen. Investigators assessed the motivation for the attack by the then 17-year-old as having an Islamist dimension.
