A gunman carried out an attack on Wednesday around midday at Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau, a small town in Upper Bavaria, seriously injuring several people. The incident occurred at the school building, located approximately 70 kilometres from Munich.
Bavarian police stated that the suspected perpetrator was arrested. According to information available so far, he acted alone without accomplices or assistants. No confirmed information is yet available regarding the precise number of injured persons and their condition. A police spokesperson told the Süddeutsche Zeitung of a single-digit number of victims.
Bild reported, citing its own sources, that multiple people were seriously injured. According to the report, there were both gunshot wounds and stab injuries. During the arrest of the perpetrator, police deployed approximately fifteen units in a large-scale operation, including a police helicopter. The attacker initially fled the scene but was located relatively quickly.
So far, no information has been released regarding the identity of the perpetrator or his motive. Police declined to comment on either the cause or background of the incident. According to initial information, there were injured persons at several locations within the school. Bild reported that the incident partially also took place in the immediate vicinity of the secondary school.
Schongau is situated on the Lech river in western Upper Bavaria, approximately 40 kilometres from the Austrian border. Welfen-Gymnasium has more than 800 pupils.
