Pupil attacks schoolmates – two girls seriously injured
A 16-year-old pupil attacked two schoolgirls on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, at Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau in southern Bavaria, seriously injuring them. The incident occurred at around 12:50 a.m. in the school building, which has approximately 80 teachers and 800 pupils.
According to police, the incident triggered a so-called "amok alarm", which is activated in cases of extreme threat. Emergency services from across the region and helicopters were deployed. A teenager was arrested near the school and taken to a police station, as Thomas Schelshorn, spokesman for Munich police, told Bavarian broadcaster BR24.
The two injured girls were taken to hospital. According to Ouest-France, there is no danger to their lives. The exact circumstances of the attack remain unclear.
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) told broadcaster BR24 that the perpetrator had a knife and a firearm with him. Police officers on the scene did not wish to confirm these claims in order not to jeopardise ongoing investigations. A police spokeswoman told news agency AFP that the suspect's identity and the exact number and condition of the injured still needed to be clarified.
The incident was classified in Germany as an "amok attack", a term for a sudden, indiscriminate murderous assault by an individual. No information is currently available regarding any possible motives of the teenager. Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder (CSU) stated that the school community and families now needed time, strength and support to process the events. Psychological support has been set up for children and parents in the town.
