In the Upper Bavarian town of Schongau, a violent incident occurred at a secondary school on Tuesday in which several people were injured. Police subsequently arrested a suspect, according to authorities. The exact number of injured and the extent of the incident remained initially unclear – a police spokesman spoke only of a single-digit number of victims, reports Mediafax.
Emergency services deployed to the Welfen-Gymnasium in the small town in large numbers. The public was urged to avoid the area widely. A dedicated point of contact was established at the local fire station for concerned parents and relatives.
According to Bavarian law enforcement authorities, the incident occurred in the sports hall of the educational institution. The arrested suspect is now in police custody.
Schongau is located on the Lech in the west of Upper Bavaria and has approximately 12,000 inhabitants. School attacks with firearms are rare in Germany due to strict weapons laws, yet the number of isolated violent incidents – such as those involving knives or pepper spray – as well as security warnings has increased in recent years.
