On early Wednesday afternoon, a major police operation took place in Schongau in Upper Bavaria. Two girls were seriously injured in an attack at the local secondary school. Officers arrested a 16-year-old shortly afterwards.
According to police information, the injured teenagers are pupils at the gymnasium in question. A police spokesman stated on the scene that they are no longer in acute danger to life. Whether the arrested teenager also attended the school was initially unclear.
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) commented on the incident. He described the case as a possible shooting rampage and stated that the arrested person had previously undergone psychiatric treatment. There were indications that the young man may have previously studied at this school. This had not yet been conclusively confirmed, however.
Minister-President Markus Söder and local Mayor Thomas Schleich also reacted with alarm to the events.
The emergency services cordoned off the entire school premises. More than 15 patrol cars and several helicopters were deployed at the scene. Relatives and parents were able to obtain information at a support point set up by the fire service. The public was asked to avoid the area widely.
The exact number of victims initially remained in single figures. Investigators are working at high speed to clarify the background and motive.
