On the afternoon of Wednesday, 9 July 2025, a serious incident occurred at Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau, a town in western Upper Bavaria, which triggered a major police operation. Officers confirmed that several people were seriously injured in the incident.
Among the victims are at least two thirteen-year-old girls who were taken to hospital following the incident. There were initially no official statements regarding the severity of their injuries or whether their lives were in danger. A spokesman for the security authorities spoke of a single-digit number of injured persons overall.
Police were able to apprehend the suspected attacker at the scene. The person in question is a sixteen-year-old. It initially remained unclear whether this individual was enrolled at the affected educational institution. A spokesperson for the responsible authority did not comment on possible murder weapons.
The responding officers advised the public to avoid the school grounds. A care centre was set up in the fire station for concerned parents and family members.
Schongau is situated on the Lech and has around 12,000 inhabitants. The affected gymnasium is located close to the historic old town. The school's website states that around 800 students are taught there by over 80 teachers. There are further educational institutions in the immediate vicinity.
Currently, the final school term is underway in Bavaria. Whilst students taking the Abitur already received their final certificates in mid-June, certificates for the remaining classes are due to be issued at the end of July.
