Plain-clothes officers from Munich police arrested a 42-year-old man on Schwanthalerstraße during the night leading into Tuesday. The man is being charged with at least 23 burglaries, which he is suspected of having committed since autumn, predominantly in the city centre. The total value of stolen goods is estimated at approximately 50,000 euros.
The suspect was already known to police. An arrest warrant was in place against him at the time of his arrest. His criminal history includes drug offences and related acquisitive crimes.
Investigators tracked down the man after a surveillance camera recorded him during his most recent burglary over the weekend on Seidlstraße. With the footage, officers were able to identify the suspect known to police. On Tuesday night around midnight, they encountered the 42-year-old on the street and arrested him.
During a subsequent search of his hotel room, investigators secured clothing items that could be connected to the offences. Suspected stolen goods were also found.
The case demonstrates once again how important video surveillance can be for clearing up crimes in the city. The Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on the arrest first.
