Investigators in Germany have uncovered a network organised via the messaging app Telegram in which men exchanged information about sexual assaults. The group posed as a "driving school for specialists", but according to prosecutors it served as a platform to boast about crimes and share methods.
Participants distributed photographs and videos of attacks on defenceless victims according to court documents. In their language, they referred to women as "cars", sedatives as "fuel", and rape itself as "driving". The victims they called "dead pigs" in the chats.
Investigators examined records from approximately two dozen group chats on the platform. The network consisted mainly of men of Chinese origin who primarily targeted Chinese women in Germany.
So far, three alleged key members have been convicted of rape and other offences. A fourth suspect is currently standing trial in Berlin. The responsible chief prosecutor in Frankfurt, Dominik Mies, described the perpetrators to the Associated Press news agency as "particularly cruel" and pointed to the "complete objectification of the victims" as well as the "insidious planning" of the crimes.
It remains unclear exactly how many assaults took place and how many people were involved in the chats. It is also unclear whether the German investigation is connected to an international inquiry in Europe and the USA that is targeting misogynistic online groups that organise sexual violence using sedative drugs.
