A deceased, prematurely born baby has gone missing from the hospital morgue at a clinic in Böblingen in south-west Germany. Police found the tiny body hours later in a laundry facility near Karlsruhe. According to the Schwäbische Zeitung, the child had been born weighing less than one kilogram and died despite medical efforts.

When a funeral home employee came to collect the child, it was discovered that it was no longer in the morgue. Police subsequently launched a large-scale search operation. Eventually, working dogs discovered the infant in a laundry facility.

According to media reports, the remains of the newborn were found "in pieces". A police spokesman confirmed that investigations are proceeding in all directions. Officers suspect that laundry facility staff collected bed linen and inadvertently overlooked the dead infant in the process. However, how the child ended up among the laundry to be washed remains unclear from the available information.

The criminal investigation authorities have launched criminal proceedings in cooperation with the public prosecutor's office. There is suspicion of disturbance of the peace of the dead and the removal of human remains from the custody of the rightful owner.

A police spokesman stated that there is no comparable case anywhere in Germany of a deceased child ending up in a laundry facility. The clinic management expressed regret over the incident in a statement: "We are deeply sorry for what has happened. We are truly sorry that the parents and relatives have to go through such an experience in an already extremely painful situation." The clinic announced it would thoroughly investigate the incident and fully cooperate with the investigating authorities.
