Letter on power station attack: Brandenburg police examine authenticity of confession
Brandenburg police have received a letter in which the writer claims responsibility for Tuesday's attack on a power distribution station in the municipality of Turnow-Preilack, according to Novinky.cz citing news agency DPA. The distribution station is located in close proximity to the Jänschwalde power plant. A police spokesperson stated that the authenticity of the document has not yet been either confirmed or refuted, and disclosed no further details.
News website taz.de announced on Thursday evening that it had received a letter whose author also claims responsibility for the attack in Brandenburg. According to the postmark, it was sent from North Rhine-Westphalia. Whether this is the same document being examined by police remains unclear, DPA points out.
According to taz.de, the writer claims he acted alone and was motivated to commit sabotage by the "immense suffering" caused by the use of fossil fuels. In the letter he described in detail homemade rockets which he used in the attack.
On Tuesday morning, one or more perpetrators attacked the power distribution station at Jänschwalde using self-made objects resembling fireworks rockets. Investigators have secured more than ten such items at the scene. Several hours later, an object in Bergheim near Cologne was also targeted, where police found launching equipment and pyrotechnic materials.
Brandenburg Interior Minister Jan Redmann said of the events: "It is becoming increasingly clear that both attacks are part of a coordinated assault on our energy supply infrastructure."
