Knife attack in Gelsenkirchen: father held in pre-trial detention

In a flat in the Bulmke-Hüllen district of Gelsenkirchen, a 47-year-old man seriously injured his 19-year-old daughter with a knife on Wednesday afternoon. According to BILD, the father allegedly stabbed the young woman multiple times.

Police were alerted at 11.50 a.m. by a resident of the multi-family house on Im Mühlenfeld street after she heard screams coming from the attic flat. Officers who arrived at the scene found both the injured 19-year-old and the suspect father, and provisionally arrested him. "According to initial findings, the father had seriously injured his daughter with multiple stab wounds," said the public prosecutor's office and police. An ambulance took the young woman to a clinic; there was initially no danger to life.

According to a neighbour, the 19-year-old attempted to flee the attic flat and escape to the neighbouring flat. Bloodstains on the door frame bear witness to this. However, the neighbouring flat had been empty for two months – nobody was able to open the door for her.

According to police, two additional minor children were in the flat at the time of the incident. Both were placed in the care of the youth welfare office. According to BILD's information, they are the victim's younger siblings. The family is said to consist of a Syrian father and his three children, who had been living in the flat for approximately one month.

Police established a murder squad and are investigating on suspicion of attempted homicide. The knife used in the attack was secured at the scene. The 47-year-old is now being held in pre-trial detention. The responsible public prosecutor's office in Essen declined to provide BILD with any information about the background to the crime.
