A four-year-old girl has died in the town of Drosa in the east of Germany after being attacked by a family dog on Wednesday. Witnesses at the scene attempted to separate the animal from the child, but were unable to prevent the severe injuries. The girl succumbed to her injuries before emergency medical assistance arrived.
Following the incident in the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, police launched an investigation into the 32-year-old mother of the victim and a 30-year-old family friend. Both face charges of negligent homicide, according to police. The deceased child's mother is receiving psychological support from the authorities.
The responsible authorities placed the dog, an American Staffordshire Terrier – commonly known as a Pit Bull Terrier – in an animal shelter.
