The Zweibrücken Regional Court has sentenced a 26-year-old Greek national to a prison term of ten years. The man stood trial for the death of a train conductor in Rhineland-Palatinate in February of this year.
The incident occurred during a ticket inspection. The defendant allegedly travelled without a valid ticket and became involved in a heated argument with the 36-year-old railway employee. According to the proceedings, the 26-year-old engaged in a physical altercation with conductor Serkan Kalar and subsequently struck him with his fists. The attack resulted in severe brain haemorrhage of the conductor, an injury that proved fatal. The 36-year-old succumbed to his injuries two days later.
During the court proceedings, the defendant admitted to attacking the conductor. However, he claimed that he had not intended to kill him. At the same time, he expressed his regret and asked the victim's family for forgiveness for the consequences of his actions. Following the announcement of the verdict, his defence team announced that it would appeal to the Federal Court of Justice and request a renewed examination of the case.
