At an event for historic vehicles in Thuringia, two visitors drew attention with an old police car and full police uniform. Real police are now investigating several criminal offences.

At an event for enthusiasts of historic automobiles in Langenwetzendorf (Greiz district), two participants attracted negative attention over the weekend. A witness observed the pair in an older patrol vehicle with police markings and alerted the responsible patrol officers.
During the subsequent check, officers established that it was a long-since decommissioned green radio car. This type of vehicle has not been manufactured for almost three decades. According to a statement from Gera police, the car presented itself in an unchanged original condition – complete with official markings and a functioning blue light system.
The clothing of the two occupants also matched the appearance of law enforcement officials. They wore outdated service uniforms of the Saxon state police, including insignia. They also had handcuffs and dummy weapons attached to their belts. The actual officers had the two remove their uniforms on the spot.
Since the vehicle had been immobilised by a technical fault, a driving ban for further travel became unnecessary. Nevertheless, police officers issued criminal charges for unlawful assumption of office and breach of weapons law.
German criminal law provides that it is prohibited to create the impression of exercising an office in the public service without appropriate authorisation. Equally prohibited is the wearing of uniforms or insignia if these could be confused with genuine service clothing of the executive.
