Two schoolgirls seriously injured in knife attack at Bavarian school
A 16-year-old attacked two girls with a knife on Wednesday in the schoolyard of Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau, Bavaria. Both were seriously injured and taken to hospital. The suspected attacker was arrested.

In the schoolyard of Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau, south-west of Munich, two schoolgirls were attacked and seriously injured by a 16-year-old with a knife on early Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred at approximately 12:50 local time.
The suspected attacker was arrested by police at the scene. According to initial findings, the teenager is said to have been carrying a firearm as well. The two injured girls were immediately taken to hospital. According to Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, they are out of danger but sustained serious injuries.
"We assume there was a single perpetrator who was carrying a knife and a firearm," Herrmann said. According to him, there are no further suspects. To date, no credible findings have emerged regarding a possible motive for the act.
The news was initially distributed worldwide by international media, as the incident was initially assessed as being more serious than it ultimately proved to be. More than 15 patrol cars as well as emergency police helicopters arrived at the school after initially information circulated about shots fired and further injured persons.
Germany has experienced several attacks at schools and shopping centres in recent years that have shocked the country.
