Two people died in an attack on Thursday afternoon (27 August) on a private school in Gosen-Neu Zittau in Brandenburg. Greek news platform ERTNews.gr reported this, citing the local newspaper Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung.
Police arrested a 19-year-old suspect, who according to the report is said to be the ex-boyfriend of the 18-year-old student. The victims are the young woman and a 30-year-old man, who allegedly lost his life when he tried to stop the attacker.
Emergency services arrived at the scene around 13:45. The authorities immediately activated the active shooter protocol. The area around the school was cordoned off extensively. Strong police forces, firefighters and numerous ambulances are at the scene. According to media reports, two rescue helicopters were also requested.
The incident occurred at the private school Docemus, which has existed since 2008 and offers lower secondary, upper secondary and vocational training programmes. Classes on Friday are cancelled, but the school remains open for students who wish to speak with specialists in a safe environment. The school leadership will decide in the coming days how to move forward after the tragic incident.
