A foreign man found dead in Gudenåen was attached to a car battery. Central and West Jutland Police are seeking witnesses and the owner of a missing battery.
Car battery used to submerge dead man in Gudenåen
A foreign man found dead in Gudenåen near Brovejen north of Svostrup near Silkeborg on Monday afternoon was attached to a car battery that held him underwater. This is stated by police commissioner and investigation leader Kresten Lund Breinhild from Central and West Jutland Police to Ritzau.
Breinhild will not explain how the battery was fastened to the deceased, but the police district has published two pictures of the object and is now urging citizens to check whether they are missing a similar battery.
"The battery may have been stolen in the vicinity of the crime scene, so if you think you have such a battery, please check that it is still in its place," writes Central and West Jutland Police in an official statement.
Found by a passer-by
It was a passer-by who on Monday afternoon discovered the deceased man in the river and alerted police. The discovery site is in Gudenåen near Brovejen north of Svostrup near Silkeborg, but it remains unclear whether this is also the location where the man was killed.
"I cannot rule that out, but I cannot confirm it either," says the investigation leader.
According to Politiken, the man was subjected to violence and may have been in the water for up to a week – that is, from around Monday 17 August.
Foreign man, not a resident
The deceased is a foreign man who was not resident in Denmark. Police know his identity but are awaiting notification of next of kin before further information is made public.
An earlier description from the police district paints the picture of a relatively small man: 165 centimetres tall, slim build, with short dark hair and facial hair described as either short beard or long stubble. He was wearing light-coloured shorts with vertical stripes.
Breinhild will not comment on whether police have any suspicion about the motive for the killing, or whether it took place in a particular environment.
Police seek video recordings and witnesses
Central and West Jutland Police urge anyone who has seen or heard anything suspicious in the area since 17 August to come forward. This also applies to owners of surveillance equipment in private homes or vehicles in the vicinity.
"Then you are welcome to save that information and contact the police. We will get back to you if it is relevant," says police commissioner and investigation leader Kresten Lund Breinhild.
