31-year-old convicted of prison assault – Islands Brygge case pending
A 31-year-old man, who will appear in court next week in connection with a fatal assault at a World Cup event on Islands Brygge in Copenhagen, was sentenced on Friday to three months unconditional imprisonment in a separate case. This is according to The Copenhagen Post with reference to B.T. and TV 2.
The ruling was handed down by Svendborg District Court and concerns assault on a fellow inmate at Nyborg State Prison in 2022. Two men of similar age have been sentenced to three months imprisonment in the same case.
Blows and kicks to fellow inmate
The three men were charged with assaulting a fellow inmate with numerous blows and kicks to the face. The victim sustained a concussion, a broken nose and a broken rib, according to the charge sheet.
The prosecution brought charges under the aggravated assault provision, but the court found the accused guilty only under the milder assault provision – section 244 of the Criminal Code. This is precisely the provision the 31-year-old is also charged under in the Islands Brygge case, which will be heard next week.
Death following World Cup screening
In the Islands Brygge case, the 31-year-old is charged with striking a 32-year-old Swedish man with a forceful blow. The assault took place on 30 June at approximately 20:45 during a large-screen showing of a World Cup match on Islands Brygge. The Swede died three days later.
According to the charge sheet, the 31-year-old at one point stood on a bench, from which he threw two beer crates at a group of people, including the 32-year-old Swedish man. Immediately after, he delivered the Swede a forceful overhead blow that struck the left side of the victim's head and neck, causing the man to collapse.
The blow caused a ruptured artery, which subsequently cost the man his life, according to the charge sheet.
Previous conviction could increase sentence
In the Islands Brygge case, the 31-year-old is also charged under section 247 of the Criminal Code, which concerns repeat offender provisions for offences against the person. The accused has previously been convicted of attempted murder, among other things. A conviction under section 247 can result in an increase of the sentence by up to one-half.
A prosecutor in the case previously indicated that the prosecution expects a sentence in the range of eight to ten months' imprisonment.
