Syrian man sentenced to prison for money laundering linked to embassy bombing

A 52-year-old Syrian national was on Wednesday convicted at Copenhagen City Court of serious money laundering. This is stated by Copenhagen Police in a press release, as reported by B.T.

The man has been found guilty of transferring or attempting to transfer a total of 3.4 million kroner that originated from criminal activity. Of this, 30,000 kroner was handed over on 30 September 2024 to a perpetrator behind the attack on Israel's embassy in Hellerup.

The sentence is one year and nine months' unconditional imprisonment plus deportation from Denmark with a six-year re-entry ban.

In the night of 2 October 2024, the embassy's security personnel heard two explosions. It transpired that two hand grenades had hit a roof terrace on a neighbouring property to the embassy.

The 52-year-old was arrested on 14 October 2024 and charged with complicity in the bombing. In February 2025, he was released, and the charge of complicity in the bombing was dropped. Copenhagen Police continued their investigation of the man, and this has now resulted in a prison sentence for money laundering.

The man's 27-year-old son has also been sentenced to one year's unconditional imprisonment for jointly with his father transferring and attempting to transfer 1.4 million kroner of criminal proceeds.

Two young Swedish nationals were in February this year sentenced respectively to 12 and 14 years' imprisonment at Copenhagen City Court for the bombing itself. The court assessed that this constituted a terrorist attack, as the jury panel found it proven that the two had intended to seriously frighten Israel's population. Both have appealed the sentence, and the appeal case is to be heard in court next autumn.

During the trial of the two Swedish men, they both testified that they had been hired by the criminal Swedish network Foxtrot to travel to Denmark and carry out the attack. They also stated that they had no political stance on the conflict in Gaza.
