Man accused of raping and murdering 'Asun' in Tenerife in 2017 refuses to testify

Quiriat Yousef, arrested nine years after the Añaza crime, refused to give a statement and was remanded in custody without bail.

Quiriat Yousef remanded in custody for the murder of Asunción González in Añaza

The man detained for the rape and murder of Asunción González Hernández in the Añaza district of Santa Cruz de Tenerife refused to give a statement either to the investigating magistrate or to National Police officers, according to eldia.es. Quiriat Yousef R.P., born in 1994 and a resident of the Santa María del Mar district, was arrested on Monday, 19 October by the Homicide Group of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The date of his arrest was no coincidence: it marked the ninth anniversary of Asun's violent death, the name by which the 55-year-old victim was known.

DNA extraction and remand in custody

Homicide officers requested that Quiriat Yousef provide a DNA sample on a voluntary basis. The accused refused. Faced with this refusal, when he appeared before the judicial authority on Wednesday, the magistrate issued a ruling ordering the extraction of a genetic sample in the presence of a medical examiner from the Institute of Legal Medicine and the officer of the Administration of Justice. The sample was obtained by officers from the Scientific Police Unit.

The duty prosecutor, María Isabel Silva, requested that the alleged perpetrator be remanded in custody in view of the documentation presented by the National Police. At 16:00 on Wednesday, Quiriat Yousef was transferred to Tenerife II penitentiary, where he will remain in custody on remand, to be kept in communication and without bail until the trial before the Jury Court.

The crime occurred in the early hours of 19 October 2017

The sexual assault and murder of Asunción González took place at around 02:30 on the early morning of 19 October 2017, inside a communal garage of a building on Calle Bentacayse, in Añaza. The victim was about to get into her car to go to her workplace at a meat distribution warehouse in El Rosario.

Her body was found that same afternoon by work colleagues who, after receiving no response to their calls and messages, went to look for her.

A lengthy investigation process leading to arrest

In the months following the crime, Homicide officers made no significant progress. Six months after the murder, the Police learned of a woman who had been the victim of an attempted rape inside a building in Santa María del Mar. The victim managed to call for help and the arrival of neighbours forced the alleged perpetrator to flee the scene, leaving behind a handkerchief containing DNA traces.

The genetic profile found on that handkerchief matched the samples collected from the garage on Calle Bentacayse. However, at that time the police databases did not contain any samples from Quiriat Yousef against which to compare that DNA, giving rise to an investigation process described as long, complex and exhaustive.

The handling of the case falls within the remit of court one of the Investigation Section of the Court of First Instance of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which was on duty at the time of the arrest. The magistrate continues to investigate the charges of sexual assault and murder.
