Two minors aged 14 and 13 sexually assaulted three girls aged 10 and 11 on Sunday afternoon at the swimming pool at the Palomeras municipal centre on Travesía de Arganda street, in the Madrid district of Puente de Vallecas, according to elmundo.es. The Municipal Police detained the 14-year-old and handed the 13-year-old to his parents, as the latter is criminally not culpable.
The events took place around 20:30, when the facility staff were beginning evacuation in preparation for closing at 21:00. The three girls were in the main pool when several teenagers began observing them, according to police sources. Two of them approached and adopted a harassing attitude towards the girls.
According to the testimony of the victims, the young people allegedly made inappropriate contact under the water. The girls alerted others to what had happened, which prompted the immediate intervention of one of their mother, who was present at the facility. The woman notified the swimming pool staff, who activated the appropriate protocol and called the Municipal Police dispatcher.
Two patrols and liaison officers travelled to the scene. Officers managed to locate and intercept the two suspects before they could leave the facilities. After taking statements from the victims, they proceeded to detain the 14-year-old minor as an alleged perpetrator of sexual assault and transferred him to the Minors Group of the Judicial Police (Grume).
The families of the three girls arrived at the police station hours later to file a formal complaint. The victims are Spanish; two of them are of Romanian and Moroccan origin, respectively. According to officers, the two minors involved are known in the neighbourhood for previous incidents.
Sources close to the investigation indicate that officers gathered initial statements at the scene and attempted to determine the exact participation of each of those involved. The swift action of the swimming pool staff and the Municipal Police prevented the suspects from leaving the facility without being identified.
The intervention generated considerable commotion among users who were leaving the facilities at that moment. Several witnesses witnessed the moment the girls reported what had occurred. "There was a great commotion. The girls started screaming and the boys wouldn't stop bothering them," said a regular pool user.
A resident praised the action of the municipal staff, but expressed regret that during summer, coexistence conflicts involving groups of teenagers are repeated at some public swimming pools in the district.
