Arrest in Málaga: Argentine suspected of murdering Hungarian woman in Benahavís

A 60-year-old Argentine was arrested on Friday in Istán, a town in Málaga province situated approximately 30 kilometres from Benahavís, as the principal suspect in the killing of a 45-year-old Hungarian woman, according to holasalta.com.

The victim, identified as Melinda, was found dead on 21 July at the Los Arqueros residential complex in Benahavís. A neighbour alerted police after hearing a scream coming from the property. Upon entering the premises, officers found the woman with a stab wound to the neck.

The Civil Guard arrested the suspect ten days after the crime occurred. According to the authorities, the man attempted to take his own life before being arrested. The detainee had been residing in Benahavís for approximately two months and Melinda had rented him a room in the property; both had maintained contact during the pandemic.

Local media report that the alleged attacker used a box cutter to commit the crime.

The authorities ruled out classifying the case as gender-based violence. The delegate of the Government in Andalucía, Pedro Fernández, stated that between the two of them there existed "a level of acquaintance", but not an active romantic relationship.

The autopsy was carried out at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Málaga. Its final results are expected in the coming days. The investigation remains open whilst the Civil Guard awaits the complete expert reports.
