An individual has been taken into custody at Las Palmerillas beach after striking a patrol car. The operation is part of a crackdown on drug trafficking on the Almería coast.

In the early hours of Tuesday at Las Palmerillas beach in Roquetas de Mar, officers from the armed institute detained an individual as the suspected perpetrator of several serious offences, including assaulting public officials, damaging police equipment and using a van of illicit origin.
It all began around four in the morning when a coordination centre received word that a speedboat was heading towards the coastline in the Roquetas area. Units deployed to the scene found a zodiac beached on the sand and approximately fifteen people who apparently were loading fuel containers into the boat.
Meanwhile, the uniformed officers noticed the presence of a van parked nearby. The occupant at the wheel, upon realising he had been discovered, accelerated in the opposite direction at high speed, ignoring orders to stop. In his attempt to escape, he collided with a service vehicle of the force before officers managed to intercept him. It was later verified that the van had been stolen previously and had a connection to the spot where the boat had arrived moments earlier.
The two members of the armed institute who were travelling in the damaged vehicle sustained injuries that have forced them to be absent from their duties. The association representing the collective, Jucil, has expressed its support for those affected and has placed legal advice at their disposal. A spokesperson for the organisation, Rafael Maldonado, has wished for the officers to recover as soon as possible and has underscored the irony that the incident took place just after a public demonstration against the closure of the local barracks.
The trade union organisation took the opportunity to criticise again the decisions of the Interior Ministry and the leadership of the armed force regarding the imminent closure of the Roquetas barracks, which will force officers to be relocated to other posts in the province.
