A man was taken into custody in Palma after subjecting his ex-girlfriend to prolonged harassment that culminated in an armed pursuit through the streets of the Son Gotleu neighbourhood. The incident occurred last Friday.

Officers from the Citizen Care Group were alerted by 091 to a domestic violence incident in public. Upon arriving at the scene, they observed an individual in a nervous state who attempted to flee upon noticing the uniformed officers. He was intercepted without delay.

A second unit spoke with the woman, who explained that the romantic relationship had ended months earlier, but that since then the arrested man had been systematically harassing her. During each chance encounter he would hurl insults at her and warn her that he would kill her if she went to the authorities.

Friday's confrontation was particularly serious. After crossing paths with her, the aggressor struck her in the face using a branch. When the victim attempted to move away, he threw a knife at her and began pursuing her while wielding a blade approximately half a metre in length. A bystander intervened to stop the escalation.

Upon the arrival of police, the suspect threw the machete under a parked vehicle, so he was not carrying it when he was arrested. Officers recovered the weapon at the exact location indicated by the victim.

The detainee was taken to police headquarters and brought before a judge on suspicion of assault.
