A 31-year-old man is being held in provisional custody after being arrested in Sant Antoni, on the Balearic island of Ibiza, for an alleged drug trafficking offence. Officers seized a package containing 224.12 grammes of high-purity cocaine.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of 2 July during a control operation in an area with a high incidence of drug consumption and distribution. Officers noted that the occupant of a vehicle suddenly descended upon noticing the police presence, whilst the driver of the car left the scene without heeding the instructions of the officers.
During identification of the passenger, the officers perceived that the subject showed signs of nervousness and was attempting to conceal something beneath his clothing. When asked to show the contents of one of his pockets, the man removed a package wrapped in adhesive tape containing white powder, which tests confirmed to be cocaine.
Once at the police station, technicians determined that the exact weight of the haul was 224.12 grammes. The samples analysed tested positive in the reactive test and showed a very high concentration of the substance. Additionally, two mobile phones were seized which, along with other evidence, suggest that the drug was intended for sale.
The judge ordered the precautionary measure of detention in a penitentiary for the arrested individual. The Guardia Civil has stated that it will continue deploying specific operations against drug trafficking in areas most frequented by tourists, intensifying controls during the summer months to preserve security and combat this criminal phenomenon.
