National Police officers detained a 39-year-old man in Santander on Friday as the suspected perpetrator of the murder of his partner, a 27-year-old woman, according to elpais.com. The crime took place in a flat in the San Fernando neighbourhood, in the heart of the Cantabrian capital.
Emergency services received a call at 12.30 requesting police attendance at a residential address in the city. Upon arrival, officers found the woman with bleeding wounds, "possibly caused by a sharp weapon", according to a statement from the Government Delegation. Medical services were unable to save her life.
The detainee, the victim's partner, "has confessed to the acts", the same statement indicated. While officers were operating inside the dwelling, several agents stationed themselves in the entrance hall as neighbours came out of nearby establishments. A woman fainted upon reaching the building; other neighbours from the stairwell, visibly distressed, attempted to comfort her.
Second arrest for gender-based violence in Málaga
Also on Friday, the Civil Guard detained a man in the Málaga municipality of Istán in connection with the murder of a woman that occurred last week in Benahavís. The 45-year-old victim was found dead with signs of violence on 21 July. Initially, the investigation ruled out gender-based violence, as the Government Delegate in Andalusia, Pedro Fernández, stated that "there is no recorded relationship of a romantic or former romantic nature between the suspected person and the woman".
Nine women murdered since June in Spain
Since the beginning of June, nine men have murdered nine women in Spain. In only one of those cases was there a prior complaint. In seven of them, the victim and the aggressor lived at the same address; in four, the relationship was in the process of ending. Of the nine perpetrators, two have taken their own lives and three have attempted to do so. As a result of those crimes, nine minors have been left orphaned.
These figures come from the latest crisis committee—a meeting between the Ministries of Equality, Justice and Interior and the regional authorities—convened on Tuesday following the spike the previous week: three murders in less than 24 hours, between Monday and Tuesday.
In 2025 so far, 32 women have been murdered by their partners or former partners. Since the official statistic began in 2003, the accumulated figure stands at 1,373 victims.
