A National Police operation culminated in the arrest in Córdoba of a man pursued for six years by the authorities of El Salvador. The detainee is accused of being part of the Barrio 18 gang, classified as a terrorist group in his nation, and of committing a homicide. Details were published by ABC.
The subject already had against him a ruling from the Spanish National Court ordering his arrest and imprisonment to enable his return to the Central American country.
The investigation began in early this month, when reports were received placing the fugitive on Spanish soil. The initial inquiries indicated that the individual had settled in Córdoba and maintained a routine designed to avoid standing out.
He lived with great modesty, without any known employment or circle of friends. His outings were sporadic and always at unusual times. This pattern of conduct reflected a conscious attempt to avoid any contact with law enforcement.
After verifying who the person really was behind that secluded existence, police officers intercepted him during one of his rare appearances in public spaces. He was subsequently transferred to a prison facility to expedite extradition procedures.
Since 2011, the detainee is believed to have been integrated into the ranks of Barrio 18, participating in the organisation of various crimes: murders, theft, extortion, sexual abuse and drug trafficking. The sentence sought against him exceeds thirty years of imprisonment.
The murder attributed to him arose in the context of a confrontation against rival faction Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), in the struggle to establish control in specific areas. This type of violence generated panic among residents of the affected areas.
