'Ndrangheta boss detained in Soria extradited to Italy after a year on the run

'Don Mico' extradited to Italy after being detained in Soria
Domenico Paviglianiti, known as 'Don Mico' and considered one of the principal figures in the Calabrese 'Ndrangheta, has been extradited to Italy after living for more than a year in Soria before his detention in June, according to reports from diariodecastillayleon.es citing the Italian Guardia di Finanza.
Paviglianiti operated in the province of Reggio Emilia, with branches in northern Italy and abroad. A European arrest warrant had been issued against him at the request of the Bologna Public Prosecutor's Office, corresponding to an accumulation of sentences exceeding 19 years in prison for offences of mafia association, murder and arms trafficking.
Spanish National Police captured him on 26 June in a joint operation with the Organised Crime Investigation Group (G.I.C.O.) of the Economic-Financial Police Unit of Reggio Calabria. The transfer was coordinated by personnel from the I-CAN Unit—Interpol Cooperation Against the 'Ndrangheta—of the International Police Cooperation Service.
Officers from the Guardia di Finanza of Reggio Calabria collected the detainee at Madrid-Barajas airport directly from the Spanish National Police, to transport him by flight to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome Fiumicino. The operation also involved the Fiumicino Group of the Guardia di Finanza and the Scico as operational support.
After landing in Rome, the Air Border Police proceeded to his photographic identification and formal notification of the detention order. The Prison Police subsequently took charge of transferring Paviglianiti to the prison where he will serve his sentence under Italian jurisdiction. The Guardia di Finanza has not disclosed the name of the prison facility, citing security reasons.
