The court has imposed a sentence of nine years' special disqualification from holding public office on David Sánchez Pérez-Castejón, brother of the current president of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez. The ruling responds to abuse of office offences committed in the context of an administrative appointment in the province of Badajoz, then governed by the Socialist Party, in a period before his brother assumed executive leadership.
The Public Prosecutor's Office had requested the acquittal of all defendants, arguing that one of the unlawful acts attributed to the accused had already lapsed. However, the judicial process continued due to the existence of private prosecutions that kept the case active.
The defence lawyers for the brother of the Spanish executive chief characterised the imputations as "pure invention" and denounced a "politically motivated process", requesting its annulment, according to Spanish media outlets such as El País, cited by Correio da Manhã.
The case adds to another corruption scandal that surrounded President Sánchez last month, when a close former adviser was sentenced to twenty-four years' imprisonment in a separate proceeding.
