The Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community announced on Monday the sentencing of 28-year-old striker Rafa Mir to eight and a half years in prison after being found guilty of sexual assault and assault causing injury. The court ruling also imposes payment of 64,000 euros in compensation to the injured party.

The judgment, handed down by the fourth section of the Provincial Court of Valencia, is subject to appeal to higher courts. The public prosecutor's office initially sought a ten-year prison sentence for the footballer from Murcia.

In the same proceedings, 32-year-old Chilean footballer Pablo Jara, Mir's close friend, received a two-year prison sentence. He was found responsible for sexual assault, violation of moral integrity and minor assault causing injury. The court set compensation of 6,280 euros for Jara's accuser, who currently plays for the American team Richmond Kickers.

During the trial, Rafa Mir consistently maintained that his relations with the 21-year-old woman were consensual. Nevertheless, the investigating judge concluded that there was convincing evidence—not mere suspicion—that the defendant committed two sexual assaults against the same woman.

The facts under investigation took place in the early hours at the footballer's home in Valencia, hours after the group met in a nightclub. Another woman, aged 25, also filed a complaint against Pablo Jara for events that occurred on the same day.

Rafa Mir was arrested in September 2024 while playing for Elche. At that time, the striker was on loan from Seville, the club with which he maintains a contract until 2026. Previously, the player developed in Valencia's lower categories and was transferred to Wolverhampton in 2018.
