Hate crimes in Andalusia rise 31%: xenophobia and homophobia as main causes
Andalusia registered 295 hate crimes in 2025, with xenophobia and homophobia as predominant motives. The regional rate rose from 2.59 to 3.40 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Andalusia records 295 hate crimes in 2025, driven by xenophobia and homophobia
The Interior Ministry has recorded 295 incidents related to hate crimes in Andalusia during the past year, according to ABC. Of this total, 102 correspond to racism and xenophobia and 75 to discrimination based on sexual orientation, the two categories that account for the majority of incidents in the region.
The rate of hate crimes per 100,000 inhabitants rose from 2.59 to 3.40 in the latest report. Nevertheless, Andalusia remains below the Spanish average, set at 4.92, and ranks last on the list of autonomous communities, headed by Melilla.
Seville and Málaga, the provinces with the most cases
By province, Seville concentrates the largest number of incidents, with 73 recorded events, followed by Málaga with 66, Cádiz with 40, Córdoba with 31, Almería with 28, Granada with 24, Jaén with 19 and Huelva with 14.
The Report on the evolution of hate crimes and incidents in Spain 2025, presented this Wednesday by the Interior Ministry, details that the region accumulated 270 victimisations throughout the year. Of these, 106 originated in xenophobia or racism, and 75 in the sexual orientation of the victims. Only 16 cases concluded with an administrative violation.
104 arrests, with sexual orientation as the main motive
The recorded assaults resulted in 104 arrests. By category, 40 occurred due to reasons linked to sexual orientation, 19 due to racism or xenophobia and 15 due to sex discrimination. Only one of all these arrests resulted in an administrative violation.
At the close of the report, security forces clarified 200 of the recorded incidents. Of this total, 75 are related to rejection of foreign persons or for racial reasons, 65 with sexual orientation and 19 with the victim's sex. In none of the clarified cases was an administrative violation imposed.
Record figure at national level: 2,417 violations
Across Spain, the State Security Forces and Bodies investigated 2,417 criminal violations and hate incidents during 2025, a 23.6 per cent increase from 2024 and the highest figure since the historical series began in 2014.
Recorded incidents increased in virtually all areas, with one exception: generational discrimination, which declined by 31 per cent. As for the criminal typology, threats led the list with 446 cases, followed by injuries with 441, promotion of discrimination with 319, damages with 119 and insults and degrading treatment with 113 cases in each category.
Security forces clarified 65.6 per cent of incidents at national level and arrested or investigated 1,018 persons. The predominant profile is that of a man—78.5 per cent—aged between 26 and 40 years.
Minors increasingly present as victims and perpetrators
The Interior Ministry underscores the increase in the participation of minors in this type of crime. Their presence as victims grew 17 per cent compared to the previous year, whilst their involvement as perpetrators increased 20 per cent. In total, minors represent 13 per cent of all victimisations recorded in Spain.
With regard to victims by nationality, those of Spanish origin are the majority, with 60.4 per cent of the total. Among foreign victims, those from Morocco register the highest percentage, with 10 per cent, ahead of those from Colombia, with 4.3 per cent.
The main age group affected coincides with that of the perpetrators: persons aged between 26 and 40 years, who account for 33.2 per cent of total victimisations. Men are also, on the victims' side, the majority group, with 62.3 per cent.
