Leader of Fanchos clan detained with 1,410 kg of cocaine in A Pobra do Caramiñal
The National Police arrested Rafael R.G., leader of the Fanchos clan, along with two other men after seizing more than 1,400 kilos of cocaine in A Pobra do Caramiñal.
Anti-drugs operation in Barbanza: three detained and 1,410 kilos of cocaine seized
The National Police detained Rafael R.G., identified as the leader of the Fanchos clan, in an anti-drugs operation carried out in A Pobra do Caramiñal, according to cope.es. Two other men were arrested alongside him during the early hours of Saturday, with all three accused of membership of a criminal organisation and drug trafficking.
At least two of those detained appeared on Monday, 24 August, before the judicial authorities in Ribeira.
How the investigation developed
The investigation began last Thursday, when police received information about the possible arrival of a cocaine shipment via a beach in A Pobra. According to the investigation, two vessels were involved in bringing the drugs ashore. The operation involved collaboration with the DEA, the United States drug enforcement agency.
Officers established surveillance operations focused on the clan leader. On Friday, at 6:55 am, they detected a first suspicious movement: a vehicle approached the home of the main suspect and, shortly afterwards, a person emerged with a rucksack and got into the car. The vehicle's occupants took various measures in an attempt to evade police surveillance.
The decisive early morning
It was during the early hours of Saturday when investigators identified the movements that resulted in the arrests. Rafael R.G. and his two companions travelled from their home to a shed situated directly opposite, in the vicinity of O Conchido beach.
Officers observed the three men moving heavy packages from the shed to another house in the municipality. Suspecting the packages contained cocaine, police decided to intervene and proceeded with their detention.
The haul and searches
Subsequent searches of the main suspect's home, the shed and the third house resulted in the seizure of 1,410 kilos of cocaine, in addition to 100 grams of heroin, cash and other items considered relevant to the investigation.
Investigators attribute to Rafael R.G. the co-ordination of receipt and safekeeping of the haul. The Fanchos clan is linked, according to police investigation, to cocaine trafficking in the Barbanza area, with particular activity in A Pobra do Caramiñal and Boiro.
The operation remains open and the three detained individuals must answer to justice for their alleged involvement in the criminal organisation and drug trafficking.
