Anti-drug operation in Arrecife: sildenafil, suspected cocaine and cash seized

The National Police arrested a 48-year-old man in Arrecife (Lanzarote) on suspicion of committing an offence against public health, according to Google News ES — Crime (es). The operation, carried out during the night of 24 August by officers from the Prevention and Rapid Response Unit (UPR), took place as part of preventive operations against drug trafficking in the Lanzarote capital.

The operation began following the discovery of a bumbag inside an establishment. Inside it, officers found 268 sildenafil tablets of 100 milligrammes, as well as cash.

The search of the premises also allowed officers to seize 101 packets containing a white solid substance which, pending definitive analysis, appeared to be cocaine, with an approximate weight of 74.30 grammes. A further 975 sildenafil tablets were found, bringing the total to 1,243 units. Officers also seized a digital precision scale and €2,020.05 in cash.

The police statement, issued by the Superior Police Headquarters of the Canary Islands, does not specify the brand name of the seized tablets or the circumstances of their distribution or marketing.

Sildenafil is the active ingredient in medicines used mainly to treat erectile dysfunction—known for its presence in medicines such as Viagra—and, in certain formulations and doses, also for pulmonary arterial hypertension. It belongs to the group of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, whose function is to promote blood flow when sexual stimulation is present.

The person responsible for the establishment was transferred to the National Police facilities in Arrecife, where he remained in police custody whilst inquiries continued. The definitive composition of the 74.30 grammes of white substance remains pending official confirmation, awaiting the corresponding laboratory analyses.
