Officers from the Ertzaintza detained a 20-year-old man on Thursday afternoon in Bilbao on suspicion of attacking another man with a knife in the Deusto neighbourhood, according to ertzaintza.euskadi.eus. The victim, aged 25, was taken to Basurto hospital with approximately ten stab wounds to the buttock.
The incident occurred just before seven in the evening on Calle San Pedro. An Ertzaintza patrol carrying out plainclothes citizen-security duties in an unmarked vehicle received the alert following several calls reporting a fight between two men.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers contacted the victim, a man of North African origin who had several bleeding wounds. The officers immediately requested an ambulance. The victim stated that, after an argument, the aggressor had pulled out a knife and stabbed him several times in the buttock, adding that the attacker had fled running in the direction of the estuary.
Medical services attending the scene confirmed that the injured man presented around ten stab wounds and required several stitches, making it necessary to transfer him to Basurto hospital.
The victim, who knew the alleged assailant previously, provided officers with a physical description of him. Following a search operation, another Ertzaintza patrol located an individual matching that description in a nearby area.
When questioned, the detainee admitted to having argued with the victim and indicated that the victim had brandished a knife at him. He claimed that he had taken it from him and had inflicted some "jabs" to the buttock before leaving the scene.
Officers proceeded to detain him on suspicion of causing injury with a bladed weapon. The arrestee, a 20-year-old man of North African origin, was taken to police premises to carry out the corresponding formalities. Once concluded, he will be brought before a judge.
