The National Police detained at Barcelona-El Prat airport a passenger arriving on a flight from Mexico City who was transporting 31.093 kilogrammes of cocaine distributed across two suitcases, according to noticiasdenavarra.com.
The flight in question is classified by security forces as a "hot flight", a police designation for routes with a high risk of drug trafficking in baggage. Criminal organisations sometimes use travellers on these routes to introduce drugs into Spain as well as other European countries, explained the National Police.
During controls at the airport, officers noticed that the passenger showed nervous behaviour and answered their questions hesitantly. He was then taken to the facilities of the Customs Service of the Tax Agency for inspection of his baggage.
The search of the two suitcases made it possible to locate 26 tablets of a whitish and compact substance in each one. Tests with reagents confirmed that it was cocaine. The total weight of the haul came to 31.093 kilogrammes.
The passenger was detained as the alleged perpetrator of an offence against public health. Subsequently, the judicial authority ordered his remand in custody.
