The arrested man had arrived on a flight from Mexico City and faces charges of a crime against public health; the judicial authority has ordered his remand in custody.
The intervention took place during routine checks applied to so-called "hot flights", those from routes where officers intensify surveillance in view of the possibility that criminal organisations use travellers to introduce drugs into Spain and other European countries.
During the inspection, officers observed that the passenger showed nervous and hesitant behaviour, and that he gave incongruent answers to their questions. Following established protocol, he was transferred to the facilities of the Customs Service of the Tax Agency for a thorough search of his luggage and belongings.
Inside the two suitcases, officers located 26 blocks of a whitish and compact substance. Subjected to the corresponding drug-test reagents, the result was positive for cocaine, with a total weight of 31,093 kilograms.
Following the discovery, the passenger was formally arrested. Subsequently, the judge ordered his remand in custody in application of current legislation on drug trafficking.
