The National Police detained a passenger at Gran Canaria airport on 29 May after discovering one kilogramme of methamphetamine distributed across four packages inside a checked suitcase, according to eldia.es.
The operation, dubbed Heisenberg, was carried out as part of permanent controls that the National Police conduct at ports and airports in the Canary Islands archipelago to stem the flow of drugs into the territory.
Officers acted following the arrival of a flight from Madrid. During inspection of passengers and baggage, they detected the substance and immediately proceeded to arrest the carrier and seize the drugs.
Methamphetamine, also known as tina, crystal or meth, is a synthetic stimulant with potent effects on the central nervous system and serious health consequences for users.
According to police investigations, a significant portion of synthetic drug trafficking destined for the Canary Islands is carried out through regular air connections from various points on the European mainland.
The detainee was handed over to the judicial authorities along with the seized drugs and the proceedings conducted. The investigation remains open to clarify all aspects of the case.
