National Police detained a 53-year-old Spanish man on Tuesday as the suspected perpetrator of 13 break-ins at properties in Madrid's Centro district, according to elpais.com. The detainee gained access to homes by forcing doors open with a single kick. Following his arrest, a judge ordered his immediate remand in custody.
The man targeted buildings with decades-old wooden panelled doors, whose structural fragility allowed him to force them open using his own physical strength. To avoid arousing suspicion during his escape, he took only small, high-value items: jewellery and electronic devices which he subsequently sold.
Officers caught him in the act and also detained his partner, who was accused of suspected handling of stolen goods. At the time of his arrest, several pieces of jewellery and a watch from one of the targeted properties were seized from him.
Investigations intensified in June, at the start of summer, when several similar assaults were detected in the city centre area. On 18 August, officers located the suspect in the Centro district when, according to the investigation, he was heading to commit another robbery.
The judicial authority charged him as the suspected perpetrator of 13 offences of burglary with force and one count of fraud. The woman, detained the same day, was released pending trial on the charge of handling stolen goods.
