The Ertzaintza detained a 40-year-old man on Monday afternoon accused of sexually assaulting a 27-year-old woman at a brothel in Irún, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Department of Security at Lakua. The details were disclosed by the Basque Country authorities.

An alarm was triggered when the establishment's control centre received an alert signal and relayed it to police services. Upon arrival at the scene, officers from Irún's Local Police and the Ertzaintza were informed that the man had sexually assaulted the victim and prevented her from leaving the premises.

A 24-year-old woman who responded to the victim's cries for help sustained blows to the ribs, allegedly inflicted by the same suspect.

Officers from the Ertzaintza's Irún station proceeded to detain the man, from whom they found €12,000 in cash. He was charged with sexual assault, unlawful detention and assault.

The detainee was taken to police facilities and, following completion of the relevant procedures, will be brought before a judge.
