Catalan police have arrested a 19-year-old individual as the suspected perpetrator of a 6,500 euro fraud against an 80-year-old woman residing in Barcelona's Sants-Montjuïc district. The arrest took place on 17 June.
According to the Mossos d'Esquadra account, the suspect contacted the elderly woman by impersonating an employee of her financial institution. Under the pretext of preventing her from becoming a victim of a scam, he persuaded the woman to grant him access to her savings. He subsequently withdrew the money from several cash machines.
The detainee, who already had eight previous police records on his file, faces charges of bank fraud. Authorities have released images captured by surveillance cameras showing the suspect withdrawing funds from the banking terminals.
The modus operandi involves contacting elderly people by telephone, gaining their trust by impersonating bank employees, and once access to their accounts has been obtained, stealing the money through cash withdrawals. This type of fraud frequently affects vulnerable groups such as elderly people.
