Real Madrid footballer Ferland Méndy will face trial for alleged serious negligence related to his dogs. The incident occurred on 4 January 2023 in the exclusive residential area of Alcobendas, on the outskirts of Madrid, according to Sport.cz.
Four dogs escaped from the player's property when the entrance gate was left open following access by a vehicle. One of the animals lunged at another dog in the street, causing injuries so severe that it had to be put down subsequently.
A seventeen-year-old boy attempted to help the attacked animal and its owner, but was bitten on the leg. Another dog that the boy was walking at that moment was also injured.
The prosecution is seeking a fine of €1,200 for Méndy and compensation payments of €5,700, a sum amounting to approximately 167,000 Czech crowns. The private prosecutor, representing the bitten boy, is demanding six months' imprisonment and €22,500, approximately 546,000 Czech crowns.
Investigators maintain that the footballer committed serious negligence by failing to ensure adequate supervision and control of his property, particularly given that the animals were large breeds. Furthermore, the dogs that escaped were not equipped with identification microchips, did not have compulsory liability insurance, and were not vaccinated against rabies, according to the case file.
The offence of serious negligence with animals can carry a penalty of up to six months' imprisonment in Spain.
