The Supreme Court has reduced the sentence from 29 to 27 years for the murderer of his ex-wife in Escatrón, applying a mental health mitigating factor despite the gender-based aggravating circumstance.

The Supreme Court has reduced the sentence of 76-year-old Ezequiel Hernández Gonzalo from 29 to 27 years in prison for the murder of his ex-wife in Escatrón, according to heraldo.es. The defendant was imprisoned in 2022 after committing the crime.
The court applied the gender-based aggravating circumstance, considering that he killed the victim because she refused to "bow to his financial wishes", whilst at the same time recognising a mitigating factor for psychological disorder, which explains the reduction in the sentence.
Despite the reduction, the prospect of freedom for Hernández Gonzalo is practically non-existent: if he served his sentence in full, he would be released at age 99. His defence attorney, Francisco José García Berenguer, will nonetheless attempt to ensure that his prison term does not exceed 25 years.
