A 23-year-old volleyball coach has been arrested in Palma accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old player under his supervision and leaving her pregnant. According to ultimahora.es, the Family and Women's Care Unit (UFAM) of the National Police executed the arrest at the suspect's home and presented him to the courts on Saturday afternoon.

The young man, of Bolivian origin, had known the victim—of Colombian nationality—for approximately three years, a period during which he served as her coach. The facts took place in mid-June, according to sources in the investigation.

The assault

The coach invited the minor and another team-mate to lunch at his house. When the friend left, the accused was alone with the victim. He asked her to enter his bedroom, closed the door and ordered her to remove her clothes. The adolescent refused on several occasions, but eventually complied out of fear and due to the coach's insistence. The young man grabbed her by the wrists and pinned her down on the bed, where he forced himself on her without protection. The coach's mother was inside the house at that time.

After the assault, the coach asked the victim not to say anything.

The pregnancy and the complaint

Following the assault, the minor's behaviour changed dramatically: she practically stopped speaking, changed her circle of friends and routines, and appeared visibly affected. Her aunt detected these changes and alerted the UFAM officers.

Weeks later, the adolescent began feeling unwell and vomiting. On 8 August, her aunt took her to Son Espases hospital, where a gynaecological examination confirmed a pregnancy. The minor terminated the pregnancy. During the period following the rape, the coach contacted the victim on several occasions via WhatsApp in an attempt to meet with her. The minor blocked him and the conversation was deleted.

Release with restraining order

Once all the information had been gathered, the UFAM officers requested a National Police patrol to arrest the suspect at his home in Palma. The detainee, represented by lawyer Belén Porcel, invoked his right not to declare before the on-duty judge in Palma.

The head of judicial proceedings number 2 of the Court of First Instance ordered his release with a restraining order keeping him 200 metres away from the victim, as well as a prohibition on communicating with her by any means whilst the case is being processed. The young man is accused of sexually assaulting a minor under 16 years of age.
