Coach arrested in Palma accused of sexual assault on minor from his team

A 23-year-old women's volleyball coach has been arrested in Palma by the National Police as the suspected perpetrator of a sexual assault on a pupil under 16 years old, reports La Vanguardia. The young woman became pregnant as a consequence of the attack.

The events occurred in June, when the coach invited the minor and another teammate to his residence. The second girl left the home, and the man took the opportunity to sexually assault the victim whilst she was alone. The suspect had been coaching the teenager for several years.

The minor's family began to suspect something when they detected a notable change in her behaviour: the young woman altered her routines and, weeks later, began to experience vomiting and other health problems. After taking her to a hospital in Palma, the pregnancy was confirmed. It was then that the minor recounted what had happened to those around her and the police investigation was initiated.

Officers from the National Police's Family and Women's Care Unit (UFAM) took over the proceedings, gathered information about the relationship between both parties and analysed the contacts maintained after the events. The suspect was arrested at his Palma residence last Saturday and exercised his right not to declare before the judge.

The magistrate ordered his release whilst the investigation continues. As precautionary measures, she imposed a restraining order of 200 metres with respect to the victim and prohibited him from any type of contact with her by any means during the proceedings of the case. The case remains open and the arrested man maintains his status as an investigated person.
