Surprise police operation halts traffic in central Logroño
Just before 9.30 a.m. on Monday, two unmarked vehicles of the National Police executed an ambush at the intersection of Duques de Nájera and Vara de Rey streets, at the height of Princesa Leonor park. According to larioja.com, officers intercepted a Mercedes saloon, exited their cars with drawn pistols and forced the driver to exit the vehicle. The man was handcuffed with his hands behind his back and immediately placed into one of the police vehicles.
The operation unfolded in a matter of seconds, which prevented many passers-by from noticing what had occurred. Those who witnessed the scene described the operation as something from a television series. Once the arrest was completed, the four participating officers moved the vehicles away from the roadway to restore traffic flow.
The saloon driven by the detainee was subjected to a visual inspection and transported along with the arrestee to the Regional Police Headquarters of La Rioja. The man, an adult wearing a white t-shirt, shorts and carrying a shoulder bag, offered no resistance at any moment.
The Regional Police Headquarters of La Rioja has confirmed that this is a secret operation still in progress, without specifying the reasons for the arrest. The authorities do not rule out that further arrests and searches may occur in the coming hours. In fact, on the same Monday morning a search of a residence in the eastern part of Logroño was carried out, according to what the newspaper itself has been able to confirm. The detainee remains in police custody whilst the National Police carry out the preliminary proceedings prior to his presentation before the courts.
