Escapee from Quatre Camins detained in Portbou while attempting to cross into France
The prisoner, convicted of killing and dismembering his flatmate in Barcelona, was arrested on 30 July at the border with France.
Arrested at the border after eight days with whereabouts unknown
An inmate from Quatre Camins Penitentiary Centre was detained on Thursday 30 July in Portbou (Girona), just metres from the border with France, according to Google News ES — Crime (es). The arrest ended an active search operation launched on 22 July, when the prisoner took advantage of an authorised release to escape.
The detention was carried out by officers from the National Police. Following his arrest, the fugitive was taken to Puig de les Basses Penitentiary Centre in Figueres, the facility closest to where he was found.
The inmate was serving a sentence of 10 years, 3 months and 1 day in prison for homicide. In May 2025 he accepted this penalty for having killed and dismembered his flatmate in November 2022 in Barcelona and having abandoned the remains of the corpse in a skip in the Eixample district.
The escape occurred during an outing organised by the penitentiary centre itself. According to information released at the time of the incident, the prisoner exited the vehicle transporting him, taking advantage of a stop at a traffic light on Marina Street in Barcelona, and fled on foot.
In addition to the prison sentence, the ruling imposed five years of supervised release once the sentence had been served. In the plea agreement, the convicted man was given the mitigating factor of mental alteration due to chronic post-traumatic stress disorder.
After remaining eight days with whereabouts unknown, the search operation concluded with his location at the Franco-Spanish border.
