Officers of the National Police detained a Polish citizen on 11 August in central Barcelona who was a fugitive from Icelandic justice, according to elperiodico.com. The man was subject to an international arrest warrant issued by Iceland for the crime of murder committed with the participation of an accomplice.
The arrest was carried out by the National Police's Fugitives Unit, whose investigators located the suspect lodged in a hotel in the city centre. Officers deployed a surveillance operation in the vicinity of the establishment and proceeded to detain the man when he was spotted in the surrounding area.
According to the police, the suspect acted with premeditation: he covered his face with a mask and wore dark clothing to attack the victim. The victim sustained serious injuries and subsequently died in hospital.
The initial autopsy results revealed that the victim presented multiple injuries: severe chemical burns caused by a corrosive substance, deep wounds from a cutting weapon—including cuts to the extremities—and blunt force trauma to the head. Investigators concluded that the suspect and his accomplice subjected the victim to torture before death.
The detainee faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment in Iceland. He had left the Nordic country to avoid serving the sentence.
