Maritime and aerial pursuit over theft of charter boat in Mallorca
The Guardia Civil has arrested a 52-year-old man, originally from Eastern Europe, in waters off Ibiza, accused of stealing a vessel valued at more than one million euros from the port of Sóller (Mallorca), according to cadenaser.com.
The incident began on Sunday morning, when the emergency services 112 received notification of the theft of a boat belonging to a charter company. Cooperation with the company that owned the vessel made it possible to locate its position, with a man and a woman on board.
The Guardia Civil activated a helicopter from the Aerial Service and two vessels from the Provincial Maritime Service to intercept the suspect. The boat was finally sighted in the vicinity of the island of Tagomago, already in waters off Ibiza.
The officers made several demands of the skipper to stop the engines, without result. During the operation, the man attempted on several occasions to ram the Guardia Civil vessels. The pursuit lasted approximately half an hour, combining aerial and maritime resources.
Finally, the suspect gave up and the vessel was able to be intercepted. The detainee was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of offences of boat theft, assault on an authority agent, and disobedience.
