A 33-year-old man of Senegalese origin died in the early hours of Monday 24 August after receiving two gunshot wounds to the abdomen on Calle Pintor Pacheco in Marbella, according to diariosur.es citing sources consulted by the newspaper.
The body was found at around 2:15 am, when emergency services received a report that there was a person lying on the public road. Initially the possibility of a hit-and-run accident was considered, but the medical teams and agents from the National Police and Local Police deployed to the scene confirmed that the man had two bullet wounds. Death was confirmed at the scene itself, with hospital transfer not being possible.
The investigation was handed over to the Specialised and Violent Crime Unit (UDEV) of the National Police Headquarters in Marbella, which is treating the case as homicide.
Prior fight with gunshots and vehicle escape
Shortly before the report, emergency services received another call related to a fight in the same area in which several shots were heard. Witnesses described a confrontation between three men; one of them was wounded and the rest fled in a vehicle. Initial investigations point, according to sources close to the case, to the fatal attack not being linked to organised crime, although the investigation remains open.
Fifth homicide of the month in the province
The incident in Marbella is the fifth violent death recorded in the province of Málaga so far in August, a summer that has accumulated a succession of lethal crimes.
A week ago, a man was stabbed by his flatmate in Estepona. The victim, 37 years old, was evacuated in critical condition with a chest wound and died in the early hours of Wednesday 19 August. The alleged perpetrator was arrested and is in provisional detention.
A few days earlier, a 52-year-old man died in his home in Málaga city as a result of a beating allegedly inflicted by another man with whom he shared accommodation. The suspect, also in prison, acknowledged his participation in the events to officers.
On 10 August, a 25-year-old young man who was moving about in a wheelchair as a result of a previous shooting lost his life after being stabbed in Mijas. A day earlier, a man allegedly killed his partner, aged 36, with a knife in the home they shared in San Pedro Alcántara.
July marked by gender-based violence
July was dominated by gender-based violence in the province. Four women were murdered by stabbing by their partners or former partners, and in one case the attacker also killed the victim's daughter. The monthly toll added up to five deaths linked to this type of violence in Málaga.
In this context, the president of the Andalusian Regional Government, Juanma Moreno, has called on the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to reactivate the OCON-Sur deployment in response to the increase in violence recorded on the Costa del Sol.
